Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
