Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
