RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
